Description
The Certified Chaplain Course is a comprehensive faith-based training program designed to prepare individuals for chaplaincy ministry across a wide range of community, healthcare, emergency response, and institutional settings. This course equips students with foundational knowledge, spiritual care techniques, crisis intervention skills, and practical ministry tools necessary to serve individuals and families during some of life’s most difficult and vulnerable moments.
Students will receive training in chaplaincy support within hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice programs, correctional facilities, prison ministry, homeless outreach initiatives, law enforcement environments, and fire department response settings. The course provides insight into the unique emotional, spiritual, psychological, and relational challenges individuals may face during illness, grief, incarceration, trauma, emergencies, loss, crisis situations, and community hardship.
Participants will explore topics such as spiritual assessment, grief support, trauma-informed care, crisis response, pastoral presence, ethical ministry practices, communication skills, end-of-life support, emotional resilience, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ministry within diverse and multicultural environments. Students will also gain exposure to the realities of scene response ministry, including providing support during fire-related incidents, police-involved situations, sudden deaths, community tragedies, and moments of acute crisis impacting individuals and families.
A major component of this course includes education and guidance surrounding Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). Students will learn what Clinical Pastoral Education is, how CPE units function, admission expectations, interview preparation, theological reflection methods, and verbatim development. This course includes consultation support for individuals seeking entry into CPE programs, where the instructor will provide guidance on theological reflections, verbatim writing, self-awareness development, and professional readiness to better prepare students for successful participation in clinical ministry training environments.
This course serves as both an introductory and developmental pathway for individuals who feel called to ministry beyond the traditional church setting. It is designed for aspiring chaplains, pastors, ministry leaders, caregivers, healthcare workers, outreach leaders, and those passionate about serving individuals experiencing grief, trauma, crisis, illness, incarceration, homelessness, or emotional distress. Students will gain practical insight into how ministry functions within clinical, institutional, and emergency response environments while developing the confidence, compassion, professionalism, and spiritual awareness needed to minister effectively in complex care settings.
Upon completion, participants will possess a stronger understanding of chaplaincy ministry, crisis care principles, clinical ministry expectations, and the practical tools necessary to begin serving in community, healthcare, correctional, outreach, and emergency response environments with empathy, spiritual sensitivity, and professional integrity.
